Lecture | Archaeology around the Schermereiland and the Beemster

During this lecture, archaeologist Pieter Floore will delve into the special history of the landscape around Schermereiland and the Beemster. The lecture is partly inspired by the work of the recently deceased archaeologist Gerard Alders, who managed to complete his doctoral thesis Het Oerij reopened just before his death. Within that research, the Schermereiland plays an important role.

The area is a fascinating junction where hydraulic developments, religion, military history and elite culture come together. The lecture will include the country houses in the Beemster, the churches of Graft and the forts of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Archaeological research, finds and concrete locations in the landscape bring the history of this region to life in an appealing and accessible way.

The lecture is part of Erfgoedpodium Schermereiland, an initiative of Oudheidkundige Vereniging het Schermereiland, Museum In 't Houten Huis and Cultural Centre De Groene Zwaan.
