Martha and Antonio’s relationship is coming to an end. Antonio leaves, whilst Martha stays behind in the Roman flat they shared for years. In ‘Tre ciotole’, you see how differently the former lovers react to the break-up.
Head chef Antonio throws himself into his work. PE teacher Martha is sick with grief – or so she thinks. On closer inspection, her stomach problems turn out to be caused by a serious illness. Surprisingly, Martha refuses to give up; she realises she has nothing left to lose and begins to embrace life. She gets in touch with her sister, arranges a date with that nice colleague and is able to tell her ex, in all calm, that it was the right decision to split up. The film is carried by Alba Rohrwacher and relies on small gestures. ‘Tre ciotole’ is about love, grief, illness and saying goodbye, but never feels heavy.
