Art and coffee | Old Masters Edam-Volendam

Nicolaas van der Waay (1855-1936), a teacher at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, liked to use the Edam Museum as a backdrop for his drawings and paintings. He visited the Edam Museum often between 1906 and 1911, also with his pupils.

The celebrated Amsterdam portrait painter Thérèse Schwartze (1851-1918) had also been taught by Van der Waay for several years from 1887 and became as famous as her teacher. She befriended the Edam 'art baker' Anthonie Beek, visited Marken with him and would also use the Edam Museum as a backdrop for her art. This lecture examines the inspiring stay and work of both artists in Edam and Volendam.
