Traces of North Holland’s history of slavery.

People from North Holland are working together in several towns and villages on a monumental provincial tapestry measuring 35 x 2.5 metres in total. This work, designed by artist Raul Balai, brings together remarkable stories from a shared past. Purmerend and Beemster are also featured in it.

Would you like to help create the tapestry at Purmerend Library? You can do so at the following times:

  • Tuesday 10.00–13.00
  • Thursday 14.00–16.00
  • Friday 13.30–16.30
  • Saturday 1.30 pm–4.30 pm

Alongside the Purmerend Library, the Purmerend Museum, Cultuurhuis Wherelant and the Betje Wolff Museum are also workshops contributing to parts of the tapestry.

The North Holland tapestry is part of the national project ‘Threads of Our Dutch Slavery Past’. Find out more at: https://dvons.nl/.
