A pressing musical theatre production about the manosphere and how, despite generational trauma and entrenched gender roles, we can reconnect with one another.
Ayşegül Karaca grew up in a family affected by domestic violence. How does it affect a mother when she recognises traits of her violent husband in the child she loves? And how does it affect a child when your mother would rather hide away half of your DNA?
In her third production, Karaca translates her personal experiences into a play about a complex mother-son relationship. Midas grows up as a little prince who wants for nothing. But in an attempt to get closer to her son, his mother actually pushes him away. As a young adult, he feels his ‘masculinity’ is not recognised and is seduced by traditional and misogynistic ideas on the internet. Despite his feminist upbringing, he seems to be falling into his father’s ways.
