Experience Wednesday morning in Edam in a special way: board a historic cow boat and sail through the atmospheric canals while the cheese market is in full swing.

A guide will take you through Edam's rich history and tell you all about the role of cowboats in the city's trade. From the water, you will have a unique view of the monumental town centre and taste the authentic atmosphere of this historic place.

What are Cow Boats?
Cow Boats are traditional steel vessels that used to be used to transport cows, they stood head to butt. In the watery area around Edam, cows were transported from grass island to grass island via these cow boats. The farmer did this with a stick, just as gondoliers in Venice still do.

Would you like to sail along on a cowboat?
During the Wednesday cheese market, two cowboats sail off and on from 11:00 to 15:00 in front of the VVV office.
