Bicycle trip through De Beemster

This 32 km bicycle ride starts at De Beemster Visitor’s Centre located in the front house of Westerhem farm, Middenweg 185 in Middenbeemster. Pick up your detailed information here. The Beemster is one of the most beautiful polders in the Netherlands, with numerous stolp farmhouses, the ring dike, monumental country homes and museums. The Beemster polder has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1999. Average NAP level Beemster: -NAP 2,11 m to NAP -5,0 m.

The bicycle trip passes the straight roads in the polder’s geometric landscape. On your path, you will encounter beautiful stolp farms like the Kleine Bijenkorf, Lepelaar, Eenhoorn and Broedersbouw, old orchards, fruit trees along the Volgerweg planted on the initiative of agricultural pioneer, Wouter Sluis. Fort Nekkerweg (now Resort), Fort Benoorden Purmerend (wine store) on the Kwadijkerweg, both built in 1913, are part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, the harness of the capital, also a world heritage site.

Stop where you like or picnic on the dike and enjoy the wonderful landscape. Notice the difference in the level when you cycle along the dike. The water in the ring canal and the lower lying land. In spring you can see young cattle in the meadow, fruit trees and the tulips start to bloom around mid-April, and the roadsides are coloured white with fragrant cow parsley.?

And .... read the short stories on the signs at various buildings.
The Land van Leeghwater is a merging of the municipalities: Beemster, Graft-De Rijp and Schermer. It is a real North Holland landscape, with green polders, numerous waterways and high dikes. Restored windmills, stately stolp farmhouses with pretty farmyards and picturesque villages continuously alternate with each other. There is a rich variety of flora and fauna.

There are two world heritage sites in the area:?
De Beemster?monument of 17th century landscape design and De Stelling van Amsterdam?Defense line around Amsterdam.
