Monnickendammer Visdagen - “Fish Days” in Monnickendam

Monnickendam up in Smoke - Monnickendam in its heyday was all smokehouses and shipyards. Its “Fish Days” will take you back to a bygone age when many of its inhabitants worked in the fish processing trade. Unlike Volendam – where the fish was unloaded – Monnickendam was known mainly for its processing: the handling and smoking of various sorts of fish: eel, mackerel and herring. Experience for yourself how for centuries Monnickendam and its picturesque harbour was a bustling scene of fish smokers, fish nets and fishing boats. And how fish smokers sent the city up in smoke.

Go back in History
Enlarged photos, information panels and original fishing tackle recall scenes in Monnickendam from olden times.
Museum De Speeltoren has a separate exhibition on the history of its fish smoking.
And in what used to be the fish market you can now discover, through image and sound, a fish’s journey from early morning unloading, smoking and finally to being sold.
Visitors can watch demonstrations of old crafts such as making fishing nets and baskets, then try these out for themselves.
To complete the experience there are actors to perform typical feast-day activities of the times.
